Taxi fares in Greece are regulated and follow a standardized pricing structure based on time of day. The meter automatically adjusts rates depending on when you travel, ensuring transparent and fair pricing.
All taxis must use their meters, and the rate displayed on the meter will reflect the correct tariff for the time of day. There are two main tariff rates: Tariff 1 (daytime) and Tariff 2 (nighttime).
Important: The meter should display which tariff is being used. Check that the correct tariff is applied for the time of day.
This is the standard rate that applies during most of the day and is the rate most travelers will pay.
Night rate is approximately double the day rate. This applies to late-night and very early morning arrivals.
Fixed surcharge for pickups from Heraklion Airport. Applied regardless of time of day.
Per bag over 10kg. Most drivers are flexible about this charge for reasonable luggage.
Surcharge for pickups from ports, train, or bus stations (not airports).
Unlike some countries, Greece does NOT apply weekend surcharges for taxi fares. The same tariff structure (Tariff 1 or Tariff 2 based on time) applies seven days a week.
This means traveling on Saturday or Sunday doesn't cost more than Monday through Friday - a welcome relief for weekend travelers!
Similarly, Greek public holidays do not attract surcharges on taxi fares. The regular tariff structure remains in effect.
Whether you arrive on Christmas Day, Easter, or Greek Independence Day (March 25), you'll pay the standard rate based solely on the time of day.
| Route | Distance | Day Rate (05:00-24:00) | Night Rate (00:00-05:00) |

*Estimates include airport pickup surcharge. Actual fares may vary slightly based on traffic and exact route.
If possible, choose flights that arrive after 5:00 AM to avoid the night rate, which can double your taxi fare.
Traveling with friends or family? Share a taxi to split the cost. Taxis can accommodate up to 4 passengers at the same fare.
Always ensure the meter is on and showing the correct tariff (1 or 2) before starting your journey to avoid disputes.
